BLUETOOTH 5 WILL BE THE HAMMER

Not even every notebook has Bluetooth 4.2 yet and development continues. Bluetooth 5 is supposed to increase the range considerably, speed up data transfer and allow so-called meshes - whole blocks of houses can become Bluetooth networks.

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has defined specifications for Bluetooth 5. However, the formal announcement will not take place until 16 June 2016. The new standard is particularly interesting for the smart home, but also for companies and for location-based services.

The new version is intended to improve radio technology and thus make it more useful for networked IoT devices. The energy-saving low-energy technology will allow considerably greater range and transmission speed in the future. It is important, not least for smaller IoT devices, that the additional power is not bought at a higher energy consumption. Bluetooth 5 is therefore particularly recommended for the Internet of Things (IoT).

Uncertainty arose, however, before the official announcement about the actual improvements. Mark Powell, Executive Director of the Bluetooth SIG, announced in advance that the range would be doubled and the speed quadrupled. This was widely reported, but contradicted the Bluetooth SIG's long-established roadmap for 2016, which provided for up to four times the range of Bluetooth Smart and a 100 percent increase in speed without higher energy requirements. In fact, according to a spokesman for the organization, Powell's latest data shows that range and data rate have been reversed.

Powell also pointed out that the next standard will simply be Bluetooth 5, so there will be no more versioning like Bluetooth 4.0, 4.1 and 4.2. This change is intended to simplify marketing and allow technical advantages to be better highlighted.

The spread of beacons and location-based services is intended to promote significantly increased capacity for required transmissions. Bluetooth Low Energy Beacons (BLE Beacons) are small Bluetooth transmitters that are mainly used for mobile marketing purposes. They allow data to be exchanged with apps installed on a smartphone to determine the user's location and then provide the appropriate information.

The roadmap also mentions mesh networking as the basis for new home and industrial automation applications. With this new feature, Bluetooth-enabled devices are to connect to networks in the future and cover entire apartments or buildings.
